Fluoride is the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. It is a mineral that is naturally present in varying amounts in almost all foods and water supplies. The benefits of fluoride have been well known for over 50 years and are supported by many health and professional organizations.  We are not speaking of the fluoride found in most municipal drinking water but that which is applied to the teeth for a brief period of time.

Here’s how fluoride works:

Topical fluoride strengthens the teeth once they have erupted by seeping into the outer surface of the tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to decay. We gain topical fluoride by using fluoride containing dental products such as toothpaste, mouth rinses and gels. Dentists and dental hygienists generally recommend that children have a professional application of fluoride twice a year during dental check-ups.

Although most people receive fluoride from food and water, sometimes it is not enough to help prevent decay. Dr. Norton or dental hygienist may recommend the use of home and/or professional fluoride treatments for the following reasons:

  • Deep pits and fissures on the chewing surfaces of teeth.
  • Exposed and sensitive root surfaces.
  • Fair to poor oral hygiene habits.
  • Frequent sugar and carbohydrate intake.
  • Inadequate exposure to fluorides.
  • Inadequate saliva flow due to medical conditions, medical treatments or medications.
  • Recent history of dental decay.

Remember, fluoride alone will not prevent tooth decay!  It is important to brush at least twice a day, floss daily, eat balanced meals, reduce sugary snacks and visit Dr. Norton’s office on a regular basis.

Alternative Non-Fluoride Treatment

As we all know, children are at high risk for tooth decay. With the array of unhealthy snacks and beverages available in the market, it is no surprise that we see more children each year in need of restorative dental work. In our office, we stress the importance of oral health, good homecare and advise limiting the consumption of sugary snacks, soda, sports drinks and acidic foods. To aide in the promotion of oral health, we offer our young patients an all natural paste that helps prevent cavities and helps restore minerals. MI Paste is an all natural, BPA-free product that uses Recaldent (an ingredient derived from milk protein). It is safe to use on babies with newly erupted teeth to help the formation of healthy tooth enamel. Our patients with orthodontic appliances will benefit from this product since the brackets can trap plaque which can cause decay, mineral loss, and white spots from the bacteria. The following are some benefits you can gain from using MI Paste:

  • Guards against plaque build-up and harmful bacteria
  • Strengthen tooth enamel
  • Helps prevent white spots from occurring
  • Helps restore minerals
  • Boost calcium and phosphate
  • Improves saliva flow
